Earlier this week, we released some changes in how we present our invoices. The result: invoices that help you understand what you pay and what to expect next time.

As an introduction, let's describe our problem: Clever Cloud bills you for the services you used over a given period, and asks you to credit your account in advance to cover the next billing period. The next invoice will consume your prepaid credits and ask for more credits for the next period, and so on. Up until now, your credits balance at a given time was not clearly displayed. That was a problem. The other problem lies in the management of free credits. These free credits have an expiration date. We had to write this explicitly in the invoices.

Now that we have expressed our problem, let's dive into the solution!

A clearer first page

First, we reworded items on the first page. In part to please our new legal service, but mostly because the existing terms were confusing. E.g. where you had "Clever Cloud consumption", you get "Platform usage fees". Add a few tweaks to make this first page easy to understand: we display a subtotal of everything you owe us for using the service (that's the new "Total fees" line). After that we display how much credits where removed or need to be added to your prepaid account. This gives us the grand total to pay.

Rethinked invoice's first page. Now with a highlighted total!

Explicating free credits

The next change appears on the second page: we give you a breakdown of all the free credits consumed / expired this month and how we compute the credits to remove or to add to the invoice.

On this second page you have: all the free credits you are entitled to, which ones have come to expire, how much you still have left to cover the next billing period. You also have all the variables we use to compute the added or consumed credits that show on the first page.

This second page will help you keep track of your prepaid credits balance and have a better understanding of why we charge you this specific amount.

Can you spot what seems to be a computation error?

With these changes, your accountant should be happy! Hopefully, this will help them understand our invoices and give them time they can spend trying to figure out invoices of your other providers! 😇

This update will only affect newly created databases, but you’re free to migrate from an old plan easily with our automatic migration tool.

The first time I wrote about Redis was six years ago, when we introduced Redis on Clever Cloud. Over the years, we’ve improved Redis with a great GUI (Redsmin), the ability to configure a follower. And now, we’re introducing new Redis plans, with brand new prices.

The Prices

At Clever Cloud, our goal is to help people to be more agile by providing efficient and fully managed services, with a fair price.

Since 2016, our Redis offers needed a pricing and features revamp to stay competitive. So today we are happy to offer a more consistent and linear offer: our previous plans used to start at €8.67 per month for 100 MB. We are now at €4.84 for the same amount of memory.

The Changes

Now databases are not limited to 100 by default: the new plans ramp up from 1 to 20 databases maximum, which should be sufficient for most use cases. These changes are part of a greater overhaul on our Redis offers, stay tuned!

This also has some nice effects I will explain later.

TL;DR

We are changing the way we measure consumption, prices remain the same.

Uptime was billed by 10 minutes slices, it's now billed by one second slices.

You will be able to use credits for everything: Applications, Add-ons, custom tasks you ask to the support team.

Invoices will display every detail about your consumption.

Changing measurement should not have any major impact on your invoices.

All those changes are possible because we have put a lot of work on our invoicing infrastructure. We are still working on it and will introduce even more new features in the coming months. In the meantime let’s go over those first changes.

Second based prices

We have always invoiced any started 10 minutes slice. It means if you have a build that takes 12 minutes and 42 seconds to complete, you will currently be invoiced for 20 minutes. Starting April 1st you will be invoiced for the duration of the build, so 12 minutes and 42 seconds. This should result in smaller invoices, especially if you run a lot of dedicated builds.

Consume everything with Credits

This is probably the nicest side of effects of all, and you have asked this for years (and I have asked it for years), you can now use your credits for everything. Applications, add-ons or any micro interventions or custom deployments you could ask our support team to do.

This will give more fluidity to our API and CLI usage when creating add-ons.

An invoice with every details

Our current invoice only has one line summing up everything consumed over the past month. The new invoice will contain a line for everything that has been consumed, whether it is an application, an add-on or a custom task. Here’s what it should look like:

To sum up, in all likelihood you are not going to spend more, if anything you are going to spend a little less. Please let us know if you have any questions or if you experience any surprises.

We already accept different payment methods:

Credit card (powered by Stripe)

Paypal

Bank transfer: Clever Cloud accepts international bank transfers. This option will generate a reference that you will have to add to your bank transfer, as a note.

and now we have just added:

SEPA Direct Debit

Why should you care?

SEPA Direct Debit allows you to pay invoices without getting limited by payment card ceiling. You only have to put your IBAN in the form. Then click on "I AGREE" and we will be able to debit your bank account after issuing your monthly invoice. Agreeing to the mandate means you allow Clever Cloud to debit your account only two days after you get the debit notification. This notification contains the invoice and is sent on the first day of each month. We first try to charge you on the 5th of this month. Would the first debit fail, new attempts will occur on the 10th, 15th and 20th of that month.

You are entitled to a refund under the terms and conditions of your agreement with your bank. A refund must be claimed within eight weeks, starting from the date on which your account was debited.
